Unusual Things Kids Say
There are so many funny things that kids say, and I don’t know that it’s funny if they’re not your kids, but they are my kids. And I love talking to them and hearing what they think about things. I use that phrase deliberately.
Think about things
When my eldest was born, it was Eurovision song contest time and the red-hot favourite was an Icelandic artist who had a very catchy song called “Think About Things”. It’s a certified banger, written by a new father saying that he can’t wait to know what his new baby thinks about things.
It hit a chord, and I loved it and listened to it on repeat, vowing to myself that, all through the long silence of the baby years, I’d always want to know what my child thought about things.
Careful what you wish for
My eldest was very slow to speak, and it felt like it took forever. But then once he started…boy did he start. Now he will not shut up. Even his peers ask him “Why do you speak so much?”…he just keeps on talking and talking at a million miles an hour.
In the midst of a ten minute monologue on the different types of dragons on Berk, I remind myself of how much I used to wish I could hear everything that my baby thought about.
This week
This was really all intro to something my eldest said this week that tickled me:
“I’m really sweaty” “Why are you so sweaty?” “There are at least 26 different reasons why I’m sweaty.”
Kids say all kinds of delightful and mental things, and it’s a wonderful window onto their bizarre little world. Paying attention and finding the joy in what they say is one of the best things about parenting.
